Microbe-Lift Montmorillonite Clay

It has been said that the secret to healthy, colorful
Japanese KOI is the clay mud in which they are raised. In Japan,
all of the koi breeders grow and breed their koi in large mud ponds,
rich in this type of clay.

In the wild, carp actually use mud to get many of their
micronutrients and minerals, but in plastic pre-formed ponds as well
as vinyl, cement and rubber lined ponds, there is an absence of these
types of minerals and micronutrients.
One way to make up for this is to add Calcium clay to
your pond, and one that we like in particular is made by Ecological
Laboratories.

The product is called Microbe-Lift
Montmorillionite Calcium Clay, which comes from one of the highest
calcium clay deposits in the world. Calcium based clay may actually
help your pond's water to produce some of the healthiest and deep
colored koi you've every raised (or seen).

Your Koi's markings will become brighter and more
dominant over time, with the use of Calcium Montmorillonite Clay, so
we highly recommend it. What's
unique about the Microbe-Lift CMC is that it has a negative electric
charge which will bind the clay particles to positively charged toxins
in the water. The clay acts as a natural flocculent and the
particles that are bound up are filtered out of the pond.
Microbe-Lift/CMC is not only a nutrient source for koi,
it will also "polish" your pond water. The clay can actually help make
your pond water sparkling clean through this "polishing."
There are several ways to administer this clay. You can either mix it
with water and pour back into the pond (called slurrying), add some
water and press it into small round balls, or even mix it with your
koi food and feed it to your Koi to give a more nutritionally complete
version of your current food to your fish.

My favorite way of using this product is to make clay
balls out of it:

Then place them into the waterfall basin, where they
will slowly dissolve as shown below:

The picture above is actually an overhead shot of one
of these clay balls in the water, slowly dissolving (notice how clean
and clear the water is!)... This clay can also help your fish
digest their food more effectively and easily!
