Today's Pond Q&A
- Waterfalls and Pump Sizing
We would like to let you know how much we enjoy your site. We have question
how strong of a submersible pump do we need in our pond.
It is approx. 10,000 gal. with a 10ft waterfall. We would appreciate if you
can help us.
Thanks for your kind comments..
The general rule is that you would like a pump that turns over
the pond volume roughly once per hour, although less is ok on
Depending on how much water you would like to move, and how
strong of a waterfall - I would recommend a 5,000 to 10,000
gallon per hour pump. However, I would definitely recommend using
an energy efficient external pump vs. a submersible pump.
Submersible pumps burn up to 5 times as much energy, and can
really run up your bill. Our best high flow pond pumps are the
Artesian and the Wunderflo pumps, which you can view here:
For filtering your pond, we recommend an AlphaOne biological
Hope this helps,
