Answer
Hi Barb,
Thanks for your question. It's getting close to that time again
isn't it?
The first week in March CAN be a good time to do a partial water
change or even a pond cleaning, but it really depends on the air
and water temperature. If the water is still fairly cold, or
below 60 degrees or so, then I wouldn't recommend doing a water
change yet.
If the weather has been warm, and the water temperature is above
60 degrees, then it's probably safe to do a partial water change
- especially a smaller one (10-20%). However, when doing a
larger water change - it's sometimes a problem if the weather
then gets cold again, which is fairly common. Fish are very
sensitive to changes in water temperatures, so it's best to wait
until you fairly sure that the warmer weather will last. But
that's not always possible.
When you're clearly into Spring, then I definitely do recommend a
50% water change, and even a full pond cleaning if possible.
Regarding the Pond-Zyme, I'd wait until the water warms up a bit
because the enzymes will be much less active in colder water (if
at all). So, wait until after your water change / pond cleaning
to add your Pond Zyme for maximum effectiveness.
Here is another product that we like very much, called
Microbe-Lift:

Hope this helps,
