600 Gallon, Three Tiered Pond Here is my three-tiered, 15 X 15 X 2.5, 600 gallon pond in Florida, with plants for shade during the hot summer. When the palms around the pond grow high enough to provide adequate shade, I will reduce the pond plants, but for now, the fish can swim the entire perimeter as well as the open areas.   I have it outfitted with a three-quarter horsepower pool pump, a large UV light for plankton, and a bubble-bead filter that filters a portion of the water every cycle. There is ample aeration, and the birdfeeders are far enough away from the edge to avoid fouling the pond. In late afternoon, they visit the shallow waterfall areas.   Although plants aren't normally recommended in koi ponds, the fish don’t harm them due to rapid growth, and it helps keep the fish comfortable with the summer sun. I have had extremely good luck with the health of the pond, which is a little over a year old.
