5' x 10' with Waterfall, Goldfish, and Plants I just completed this pond. I started dreaming up ideas of what I wanted it to look like early last year. I got on your Q & A mailing list and learned so much more about the various situations you can run into with different fish and plant life. As I started planning my layout, I bounced a few questions off Carolyn who is a wealth of knowledge on ponds, fish and plants. My back yard is not too big and I didn't want to build something that would take it over. When I first mentioned to Carolyn the size I was going to built, 4' x 8' oval, she said what ever size you are going to build, go a little bigger. I drew it out on the lawn and then went bigger to 5' x 10' which I'm glad I did. I also went a little bigger on all the equipment- pump, UV filter and Biofilter. My plan was to build some type of an "English Garden" of a sort with an irregular stone patio in front of it so I could put chairs around to sit on a level surface. My yard sloped slightly(2' over 20') downward toward two huge Holly trees. I decided to use the excavation dirt and build the area around it up. I built a small retaining wall behind it into the Hollies. The back of the retaining wall houses my electric and plumbing. I installed a submersible pump in a sock in the deepest portion of the pond at 3 1/2' which pumps up through the wall to the UV filter, back through the wall to the biofilter and over the falls. Carolyn recommended using the Microbe Lift PL and Ensure to give the pond the proper balance since I added a dozen different types of fancy goldfish and plants. The water is now incredibly clear (visibility at least 3') and all the pond life is doing spectacular. Here are before and after pictures including a night shot.
