  • WHAT KIND OF KOI IS THAT?
    .
I want to talk about the different colorations in koi, namely the basic varieties that many of us may want to add to the pond this year, if we don't already have one. First is the very special Tancho.

This is the all white fish with the red circle on its head. The red circle is said to signify the rising sun of Japan so is a sacred symbol of their country.

The fish should have a very clear and deep white color with no pink or yellow cast to it and the red circle should be as close to centered as possible.

    WHAT ABOUT THE HEAT?
    .
How does the heat affect your koi, you say? Well, koi are temperate zone fish, not tropical fish. So they are not as suited to hot conditions as you might think.

I have set a precedent annual birthday party on my deck overlooking the pond for friends and family in which we set the small round tables with fancy tablecloths and silverware, napkin holders, fancy cut glass vases, piped-in dinner music and, of course, underwater lights to enjoy the koi after dark.

It has become a very special occasion.

    Water Foul & Ponds
When the pair of mallard ducks (at least I think they were mallards, but they might have been the ever increasing Brandt geese) landed in the pond, I thought it was a lovely addition to my natural woodland glen retreat.

But it soon took on nightmarish proportions. These wild fowl are protected by the government, so you can't do anything to harm them, no matter what they are doing to your peaceful retreat.

    They started their mating rituals...
