The beads float!  The more buoyancy that the beads have, the better off.  To increase buoyancy the manufacturer has added air to each individual bead during manufacturing.  These beads will stay as close as possible to the top of the filter during backwash.    The surface of the bead is dimpled to add more surface and non-abrasion are for the bacteria.
