Sand filters use fine sand... it's heavy and easily overloads with waste, media cakes and the result is channeling.  Fine sand media is intended for swimming pools NOT heavy solid waste applications like ornamental ponds and fish ponds.  Floating bead filters require internal filter screens to keep the floating bead media from escaping the filter, as well as agitation (blowers) to break-up packed media...  PSP filters do not use screens or air blowers! The PSP Filter Solution is:  specialized internal filter laterals, unitque FilterClay filter media and non-obstructive filter diffuser. FilterClay Media is pure, organic clay, finely ground and granulated into specific sized pellets (4 - 8mm), baked at a temperature of 1200° C inside a rotary kiln, without artificial additives, pesticides or dyes.  FilterClay Media weighs significantly less than sand and resists caking, creating a more effective filter bed, better suited for heavy solid waste applications.  Additionally, FilterClay provides an exceptional environment for colonizing nitrifying bacteria. FEATURES: "Fixed" Filter Media Bed provides effective solid waste capture and backwashing of the media. No internal filter screens that can clog... PSP diffuser allows large debris/waste particles to easily flush from the filter during backwash. FilterClay Media is of a specific size and weight best suited for heavy solid waste applications.
