Pond Considerations
Garden Ponds
Before building a pond,
you should decide on what kind of pond you want. Will it be a garden
pond or a pond with fish or koi? There is a big difference between
the way a water garden and a fish pond are built. A fish pond will
need a lot of filtration and more maintenance. A garden pond can
have varying amount of filtration from none to much depending on how
clear you want the water to be. The clearer the water, the more
filtration is needed. It could just have plants if you like. If you
decide to build a garden pond, then you should observe the following
considerations.
First and foremost, you
need to decide if you have room to build a pond. Usually this is no
problem because you can have a pond as small as a barrel. Then you
need to decide if you want the pond to be surrounded by trees or
shade. This can present future problems as leaves could fall into
the pond making cleaning quite arduous. Also, you need to make sure
pond plants get adequate sunlight as few of them grow well without
proper amount of light.
After all that,
building a water garden is quite easy. The steps are quite straight
forward and logical. First dig a hole to your desired pond size.
Then put in a liner and hide the liner edges with something.
Finally, install a pump to circulate the water and add plants to the
pond to complete your garden pond. It is easy to maintain it and
there is no need for a filtration system if you don’t mind cloudy
water. However, if you encounter algae bloom, then you will need
filtration for your garden pond.
There are four types of
pond plants to consider for your pond garden. Oxgenator plants help
keep the water clear and are usually totally submersed beneath the
pond. Floaters are just plants that usually have their roots and
stem submersed but their leaves and flowers above the water.
Marginals are just plants that usually reside in the shallow part of
the pond. They provide nothing more than decorations. Lastly, there
are deep water plants that need to be planted in water depth of
one-foot or greater.
The above
considerations should be taken into account when building a garden
pond for yourself. The way your pond turns out is only limited by
your creativity. There are many options and plants to help you
realize your dream water garden.
