Pond Health Considerations
Fish Pond Health
Now that you have
built a fish pond, installed everything needed to start your pond, and made it
all beautiful, you sit back and enjoy the pond. Everything is great and plenty
of admirers pay you compliments.
In fact, maybe you
might have even made it into a natural water garden too to go with the fish
pond. Things are looking good and you have no worries until you realize you need
to maintain the pond or prepare it for the winter.
You start panicking
because you do not know what to do to preserve that pretty pond. Well, do not
fear, just follow these few tips and your pond will always be there for your
enjoyment.
After winter and
with spring approaching, you should start increase the water circulation. Once
the water temperature reaches a constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit you should start
feeding your fish. If there are leaves or other debris in the pond, it should be
removed with a skimmer type net.
Do not attempt a
complete cleaning because it will upset the balance of the fish pond. During
summer, continue to feed the fish well with high protein food to help them build
up their fat reserve for the winter. Remember to fertilize the plants well and
remove any dead foliage from the pond. You also have to maximize the aeration in
the pond.
As fall approaches
and temperature starts to drop, less food should be fed to the fish because
their metabolism will be dropping. Once temperature hits the 60s then only feed
the fish once a day.
